The Boss

On many occasions my father has explained that he has chosen various professions so that he may be his own boss. My father has even encouraged me to get a job where I am my boss. I imagine many parents wish this for their children as well.

However, the phrase “being your own boss” is suspect. Ultimately, when is one not their own boss? Isn’t each person responsible for themselves? Nobody is making you make yourself get out of bed every morning to work at your respective employment field and do the things your normally do.  Nobody is making you make yourself decide to work at a profession you may or may not enjoy.

Some might be thinking that they need to work somewhere to pay off debts, travel, because family said so, etc. However, ultimately nobody is making those people make those decisions and do those things. They have made up their own mind to follow the current paradigm set forth by others.
